BESC researchers from the University of Georgia, The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, North Carolina State University and Georgia Tech collaborated on a publication titled; Carbohydrate and lignin are simultaneously solubilized from unpretreated switchgrass by microbial action at high temperature in Energy & Environmental Science which states “the majority (85%) of insoluble switchgrass biomass that had not been previously chemically treated was degraded at 78 °C by the anaerobic bacterium Caldicellulosiruptor bescii."
